What we do

We portray a Parliament infantry unit of the English Civil War in the year 1645. We are part of the Sealed Knot society, which has been re-enacting the civil war and raising money for charity for over forty years and is one of the largest historical re-enactment groups in Europe.

We meet throughout the year to re-enact the battles and the living conditions of the period. We fight battles as well as small skirmishes with both armies’ supported by cannons and cavalry in front of members of the public. As well as this, we also create a static soldiers camp to demonstrate the everyday life of the soldiers.

At the larger events we have our own beer tent with live music and there are always a few campfires to unwind around. The atmosphere in the beer tent is electric!

What roles can I play?

The fighting aspect of the battles is pretty full on with semi contact hand to hand using pike, sword and musket butt so if you like a bit of a scrap think of it as rugby with weapons and armour!

Gender is unimportant. You can join as a drummer, pikeman, musketeer or camp follower. You must be aged 16 or over, to take part in actual battles, but there are roles for all ages and abilities. If you fancy the ultimate stress buster as a hobby then life in a civil war army could be right up your street!

The Sealed Knot provides a great activity for everyone, young, old, single or families. It gives you the opportunity to travel to places and make many new friends.

How much will this cost me?

It need not be expensive, Birch’s regiment has a system where for your first two years we can issue you with a uniform and all the equipment you will need to recreate a soldier from the period until you can build up your own kit. This dramatically reduces the costs for new members. No other unit within the Sealed Knot does this.  Be warned, this is serious fun and you will most likely become addicted!
